6 Common Dog Care Mistakes

Dogs have been our friends and companions for thousands of years. We’ve gotten to know Fido pretty well in that time, and have a good idea of what his needs are. Our four-legged friends don’t have expensive taste, but they do need good care in order to stay safe, happy, and healthy. Feeding your pooch a good diet, and taking him to the vet regularly will see to his basic care needs, but good doggy parenting goes beyond that! Read on as a local Orangevale, CA veterinarian lists some common dog care mistakes.

Lack of Dental Care

If you’ve ever had a toothache, you know how painful dental problems can be. They aren’t any more fun for Fido than they are for us! Dogs can develop many of the same dental issues as people can, such as cracked, broken, or misaligned teeth; gum disease; and infections. Fido should have his teeth checked by the vet at least once a year.

Inadequate Training

Good petiquette is very important! In addition to being housebroken, Fido should know basic obedience commands, such as Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. These are very important, both for petiquette and for safety! If your furry buddy hasn’t yet mastered these commands, bring him back to doggy school!

Overgrown Nails

If Fido’s nails get too long, they can cause him a lot of discomfort. Over time, they can even contribute to painful medical issues, such as arthritis. If you’re nervous about trimming your canine friend’s claws, just call us to schedule a quick pawdicure.

Negative Reinforcement

We know, our canine friends aren’t perfect. But if Fido does something wrong, such as chewing up your new shoes, or digging a hole in the yard, don’t react by punishing him. Dogs don’t think the way we do, and don’t understand punishment. Instead, focus on rewarding your pet for behaving well. Seek professional help for dealing with behavioral issues.

Not Enough Stimulation/Activity

Our canine buddies are naturally playful, intelligent, and active. Offer Fido lots of fun, suitable doggy toys. Making sure your pooch is getting enough exercise is also very important.

No ID

If Fido hasn’t been microchipped yet, we recommend getting this done immediately. It could save his life one day! Proper ID tags are also very important.
