Fun Ways to Celebrate National Puppy Day

Dog lovers, put a paw print on your calendar for March 23rd: it’s National Puppy Day! Of course, we love dogs of all ages, but puppies have a special way of putting smiles on our faces and melting our hearts. Here, a Folsom, CA vet offers some helpful tips on celebrating this special holiday with Fido.

Toys

Toys are lots of fun for dogs, but they’re also great for them, physically and mentally. A fun round of Fetch is a wonderful way for your pet to get a good workout in. Plus, playing will burn off your pup’s excess energy, leaving him calmer and better behaved afterwards. Get your canine buddy a fun new plaything! Then, indulge him with a fun play session.

Treats

If there’s one surefire way to get Fido’s tail going, it’s with a yummy snack. Store-bought treats are fine, but you can also make your furry friend’s biscuits. Just stick with recipes that use dog-safe ingredients. Dogs can also have some pet-safe people food, such as plain, cooked meat, fish, or chicken with the bones, skin, and fat removed.

New Digs

Is Fido’s bed looking a bit flat? Why not get him a new one? If you have a yard for your pooch to patrol, make it more fun for him by adding a doghouse or perhaps a kiddie pool.

Adventures

Man’s Best Friend loves to explore and check out new places. Take Fido to a dog-friendly park or beach. Or, visit a doggy café and get him a special treat. If your pet is a puppy, this will also help socialize him.

Spa Day

Is your pooch due for a bath? Help him form a ‘pawsitive’ association with being bathed and groomed. First, call him into the tub, and offer him a yummy treat. Then, give him a good bath. Follow up with a long walk and another snack. Or, just take him to the salon. Cuddles from a clean puppy are one of the best things in life, as far as we’re concerned!

BFF Time

Spend some quality time with your pet, and dole out lots of belly rubs and ear scritches. Of course, this doesn’t only apply to young dogs. No matter how old Fido is, he’ll always be a puppy at heart!
