Helping A Shelter Dog Settle In

Here at the Veterinary Healing Center of Folsom, we always love seeing shelter dogs get adopted. If you’re planning to adopt a shelter pup soon, you definitely have our support! In this article, a Folsom, CA vet offers tips on helping your new pet settle in.

Make sure your home is safe for your canine pal before you bring him home. Remove or secure anything that could be dangerous, such as toxic plants, wires and cords, chemicals, medicine, and anything small or sharp. If you have a yard, make sure that your fencing is secure, so your pooch can’t go over or under it.

Coming Home

Have everything your furry friend will need ready and waiting for him. Your shopping list should include bedding, dishes, toys, treats, grooming supplies, a leash, and a collar or harness.

Settling In

Fido may sleep a lot at first. Being in a shelter is stressful and scary for dogs! Your pooch may need time to adjust. You may want to set him up in quiet back room. That way, he will have a safe, comfy place to relax.

One of the first things you’ll want to do is take Fido to meet his new doctor. Although most shelter pups have already been fixed, your furry pal will need a thorough exam. You’ll also want to make sure your pet is microchipped and current on his vaccines and parasite control.

Make sure you have a good grip on Fido’s leash when you walk him. Your canine buddy could have a few quirks you don’t know about yet. He may try to bolt if something frightens him, and could quickly get lost.

Dogs tend to do best when they are on a set schedule. Get Fido started out on his new routine for meals, walks, and playtime right away.

If Fido doesn’t obey simple commands, like Sit, Stay, and Come, start working with him immediately. Obedience is important for both safety reasons and petiquette!

Tail Wags

Don’t be surprised if your furry friend absolutely adores you. Dogs know when someone has helped them. Fido will repay you with unconditional love and loyalty, tail wags, and happy dances. These are all priceless gifts in our book!
