Alternative Medicine

At Veterinary Healing Center of Folsom, we believe in treating the whole animal, not just the symptoms. Our alternative medicine options allow us to promote balance and natural healing, and are the perfect complement to our traditional medical services. The result is a powerful, holistic approach to animal health care. All of our Eastern medicine offerings have been practiced on both humans and animals for centuries as a way to treat a broad spectrum of ailments and promote an overall healthier life.

Veterinary Acupuncture

The ancient practice of acupuncture is the same in pets as it is in humans. It involves the use of tiny needles which, when inserted into various acupoints along the body, trigger the body’s natural pain control and healing mechanisms. Acupuncture is virtually painless, but the results can often be seen after just one treatment. We currently use acupuncture to manage a wide range of ailments and medical conditions in companion animals, including:

  • Musculoskeletal conditions
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Respiratory disorders
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Dermatological conditions
  • Neurological disorders

Chinese Herbal Medicine

For thousands of years, the Chinese have long held the belief that certain herbs, when strategically combined together, can provide a natural way to manage the health of both people and animals. Chinese herbal medicine is particularly effective in treating chronic medical conditions and is often used to relieve pain, improve and restore proper organ function, and strengthen the immune system. The ultimate goal of herbal therapy is to gradually return the body to a state of balance and wellness without the risk of side effects that traditional pharmaceuticals can present.

Homeopathic Medicine

Homeopathy is a holistic therapy option that is based on the theory that the same substances which cause illness in the body, when used properly, can also counteract those same symptoms. The word homeopathy literally means “to treat with a similar disease”. Homeopathic medicine uses natural ingredients to help strengthen the body’s ability to fight off illness and restore a sense of balance throughout. It is especially effective in managing chronic medical conditions to improve the patient’s overall quality of life.

Our holistic medicine options are typically used in conjunction with our traditional Western medical services, although they can be used as standalone treatments in certain cases. Your pet’s individual situation will be carefully considered when we are developing our treatment recommendation.

If you’re curious about how our integrative therapy options might provide healing and relief for your pet, we invite you to start a conversation today!

We have been taking our two dogs here for over 10 years. Dr. Cahoon always makes sure to explain everything and find options for our dog who has had a lot of health problems. Even though we live farther away now we still drive just to see them.

Our dog Mucho was in intense pain last Christmas and having trouble walking. After a few weeks of rest and pain medication Dr Cahoon began treating him with laser and acupuncture therapy along with Chinese herbs. We are happy to report Mucho is now a happy active fellow. As we continue with his therapy, we are very grateful for this wonderful veterinary clinic.

Dr. McKerney has been treating my cockapoo, Waldo, with accutpunture for a couple of months now due to a spinal injry that resulted in paralization in the hind area. Waldo can now walk, a little wobbly. When recommended to me we did not know if Waldo would ever be able to walk again. Dr, McKerney is worth our drive (50miles) and time. She was also very thorough in reviewing all of Waldo's medical records prior to seeing him. Waldo is never expereinces any anxiety about going - that says a lot!
