Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy is a new ground-breaking treatment option for dogs with cancer. Cancer cells normally grow and spread because the immune system fails to recognize them as abnormal, allowing them to continue to metastasize. K9-ACV is an immunotherapy vaccine used to help the dog’s immune system recognize the cancer cells as detrimental and attack them. If the dog has a tumor that can be removed, a vaccine can be created for that patient. First the tumor is removed and shipped to Medivet labs where the tumor and the cancerous cells are used to create a vaccine that alerts the body that those specific cancer cells are harmful. The personalized cancer vaccine is administered to the dog which “wakes-up” the immune system and helps it to recognize the dangerous cancer cells within the dog’s body. The immune system then naturally starts killing the cancer cells and potentially helps prevent them from spreading further.   The immunotherapy vaccine is created in the Medivet lab using your dog’s own specific cancer cells. Veterinary Healing Centers will then be able to administer the vaccine. We create three vaccines, which are given 4 weeks apart.

The following are common cancers that are treatable with the immunotherapy cancer treatment vaccine.

  • lymphoma in dogs
  • mast cell tumor in dogs
  • sarcoma in dogs
  • osteosarcoma in dogs
  • melanoma in dogs
  • hemangiosarcoma in dogs (spleen or liver hemangiosarcoma cancer in dogs)
  • dog skin tumors
  • mammary tumors in dogs
  • oral melanoma in dogs

I have been bringing my dogs and cats to Dr. Brad Cahoon for 15 years now. I trust him and his staff to care for and diagnose my pets. They are located conveniently and open 7 days a week. I won't go anywhere else!

The Veterinary Healing Center in El Dorado Hills is fantastic. My cat Marshmallow and I have been with them for a year. I brought Marshmallow there for a second opinion about his breathing problems because of asthma and upper respiratory issues. He was getting injections about every 6 weeks, and those many trips to the vet were very stressful on him. Dr. McKerney, took Marshmallow off the injections - steroids and convenia – and put him on a tablet of doxycycline. She felt that his main issue is upper respiratory. Marsh has not had any breathing problems for a year, and he is happy to take his pill in a pill pocket! I have such a positive experience when Marshmallow and I visit. Marsh is not the best behaved patient, and Dr. McKerney is wonderful and is always so patient and gentle with him, and the staff is patient and gentle with him, too – I am grateful, and thankful!!

We have been taking our two dogs here for over 10 years. Dr. Cahoon always makes sure to explain everything and find options for our dog who has had a lot of health problems. Even though we live farther away now we still drive just to see them.

I'm always comfortable taking my pets to see Dr. Cahoon, whether it's my rats or my dog he has always shown compassion. He never overcomplicates a situation or problem which always makes the visit a little bit easier. He has been seeing my 10 year old epileptic dog since he was a puppy and recently performed a very successful surgery on my rat(yes rat💗🐀 )
