Nutrition & Weight Management

“Exercise is King, nutrition is Queen, put them together and you’ve got a kingdom.” ~ Jack LaLanne

Your pet’s diet and how much he or she weighs both play a significant role in his or her overall health and longevity. The right nutritional balance and a healthy weight can promote a better immune system, improve performance, and even help to manage a number of common medical conditions, such as arthritis and diabetes.

The problem is, with so many food options to choose from and little reliable information about pet weight control, these topics can be downright confusing – even for the most seasoned pet parent. That’s why it’s important to work with someone who is experienced in the complexities of companion animal nutrition and weight management and can help place your pet on the right path to optimum health.

The team at Veterinary Healing Center of Folsom is here to help! We can create an individualized plan that will bring out the very best in your animal friend.

The Right Diet

We’ll begin by determining what your pet’s unique nutritional needs are. This is important, because every animal is different. We want to develop a diet that will maximize your pet’s good health and effectively maintain that health over time. We’ll examine your pet and take into consideration such critical factors as age, breed, weight, and current health status. This will allow us to make a professional recommendation on what food would best suit your companion’s individual needs.

A Healthy Weight

Next, we’ll focus on your pet’s weight. If your companion is carrying a few too many extra pounds, we’ll want to come up with a plan for calorie control and exercise that will shave off some of that excess weight and help your pet become more fit. Conversely, if your pet doesn’t weigh enough, we can also help to bring the scale up to a healthier number. Even if your pet is elderly or suffers from an existing medical condition, we can still find a way to incorporate physical activity into his or her daily routine.

Ongoing Maintenance

Along with our diet and exercise plan, it’s also important that we re-examine our approach at certain intervals throughout your pet’s life to make sure we’re still achieving the results we’re after. As pets age, their bodies change along with their health care needs. We will re-evaluate your pet from time to time and make any necessary modifications to our plan so that it remains as effective as possible, year after year.

You adore your pet and want to see that little guy or gal enjoy as many happy, healthy years as possible. It starts with a balanced diet and a healthy weight. We can help get you both on the right path. Give us a call today!

Dr. McKerney has been treating my cockapoo, Waldo, with accutpunture for a couple of months now due to a spinal injry that resulted in paralization in the hind area. Waldo can now walk, a little wobbly. When recommended to me we did not know if Waldo would ever be able to walk again. Dr, McKerney is worth our drive (50miles) and time. She was also very thorough in reviewing all of Waldo's medical records prior to seeing him. Waldo is never expereinces any anxiety about going - that says a lot!

We started seeing Dr Cahoon and Dr McKerney because we needed alternative health care for our 12yr old mutt. We specifically chose Veterinary Healing Center for their knowledge and experience with Eastern Medicine applications. Our family is overjoyed for our pet and the pain relief he is now experiencing since starting his treatment plan just a few months ago. The staff is always friendly and attentive. The prices are comparable to other veterinary offices. I highly recommend their services for your pets needs.

I'm always comfortable taking my pets to see Dr. Cahoon, whether it's my rats or my dog he has always shown compassion. He never overcomplicates a situation or problem which always makes the visit a little bit easier. He has been seeing my 10 year old epileptic dog since he was a puppy and recently performed a very successful surgery on my rat(yes rat💗🐀 )

We have been taking our Labrador to The Veterinary Healing Center for almost two years to treat her with eastern medicine/procedures for radiating pain from her neck to down her front leg. After about 6 acupuncture treatments and cervical formula powder supplements we saw a remarkable improvement! She went from limping and barely able to climb stairs to running around the yard and jumping into the pool! She was like a brand new dog! We continue with monthly maintenance treatments and we couldn’t be happier with the results! We now take our English Golden Retriever puppy there for checkups!
