When it comes to surgery, the team at Veterinary Healing Center of Folsom is up to the task. In fact, surgery is something that is part of our everyday routine. Of course, we also realize that for you and your pet, it isn’t something you have to deal with very often. Because of this, you may be struggling with a number of questions and concerns. Will my pet be safe? Will he or she be in a lot of pain? Will everything go smoothly?  These are all normal questions and concerns!

Rest assured that your loved one will be in caring, capable hands with our surgical team! Our doctors are experienced in performing a wide variety of pet surgeries, both routine and advanced, using the most up to date techniques and always adhering to the strictest standards of safety and care. From our pre-surgical care to the moment it’s time to bring your pet home for recovery, we’ll do everything within our power to make the entire experience as positive and stress-free as possible for you both.

Prior to your pet’s surgery, we always recommend certain diagnostic tests, which help us to determine your pet’s ability to safely undergo anesthesia and surgical care.  This screening also helps us to identify certain unique risk factors that we must plan for ahead of time.  With our state-of-the-art laboratory equipment we can have results in just a few minutes, or if more comprehensive testing is indicated, we can have results back in as quickly as 24 hours.   The results we receive can help us determine the safest medications and anesthetic protocol to use for your pet, potentially identify any underlying diseases not visible on physical examination, establish healthy baseline values, and even postpone procedures in an effort to perform additional diagnostic testing if preliminary results indicate a necessity.  When we have an idea of what to expect on the day of surgery, the entire process will go more smoothly.

Pre-surgical care also includes developing an appropriate plan for managing your pet’s pain. Our goal is to keep your loved one as comfortable as possible while also minimizing risk as much as we can. That’s why we use only the safest, most effective anesthetic products, which we tailor to meet your pet’s specific needs and risk factors. The result is a more pain-free experience – before, during, and following surgery.

The morning of your pet’s procedure, we will welcome you, get your loved one settled in, and help you complete any necessary paperwork. We encourage you to bring up any last minute questions or concerns that are weighing on your mind at this time so that we can discuss them further and set you at ease. Just before surgery, we will prep your pet, administering the pain medication and offering comfort as he or she drifts off into a safe level of anesthesia.

Surgery will be conducted with great precision and efficiency, so as to limit the amount of time your pet will need to be anesthetized. Our experienced technicians will remain on hand at all times during the procedure to assist with surgery and monitor your pet’s well-being throughout the process. Our surgical suite features modern monitoring equipment to help us remain on top of your loved one’s health from start to finish.

Once surgery is complete, we will carefully move your pet to our hospital recovery area. There, he or she will continue to be closely monitored as the anesthesia begins to wear off. A dedicated team member will remain with your pet to make the process a little less stressful. You can expect a phone call explaining how the procedure went and arranging a time for you to come retrieve your pet.

Should any questions or concerns arise after you’ve returned home with your pet, we encourage you to pick up the phone and give us a call. Our goal is to get your loved one back on his or her feet again as soon as possible. Give us a call today. We can handle all of your pet surgery needs!

About our Surgical Laser

Laser surgery has been widely accepted as a higher standard of care in human medicine for over 30 years.  It presents a host of benefits over traditional surgery, and in many procedures, they can replace the scalpel entirely.  Human-grade surgical lasers are now available for veterinarians to use to help your pet have the best surgery and recovery possible!

What are the benefits of laser surgery?

Less Pain: The laser seals nerve endings as it “cuts.” As a result, your pet will experience less pain and be more comfortable after surgery.

Less Bleeding: The laser cauterizes small blood vessels during surgery. Because there is less bleeding, surgery is often completed more quickly, thus reducing the amount of time your pet will be under anesthesia. This makes surgery safer for all pets, but especially for geriatric or sick patients who may be predisposed to complications with anesthesia.

Reduced Swelling & Infection: Physical contact between the laser and the surgical region is never established, thus eliminating the crushing, tearing, and bruising of tissue associated with traditional surgical methods.  Additionally, the CO2 laser energy acts as an antibacterial agent by producing high temperatures, effectively eliminating microorganisms.

Faster Return to normal activities: Healing is rapid and there is less post-operative discomfort, which sets the course for a better healing process.

In an effort to provide the best care possible to your pets, Veterinary Healing Center uses a Cutting Edge surgical laser.  Call us today to schedule a consultation for laser surgery on your furry friend!

Brought PeeWee, who lost use of his back legs, in today for the first time and were treated with calm and care. I love the Eastern approach and we all have high hopes that acupuncture, laser treatment, and some herbs will fix the hitch in his giddyup and restore his youthful step again. Fingers crossed.

The Veterinary Healing Center in El Dorado Hills is fantastic. My cat Marshmallow and I have been with them for a year. I brought Marshmallow there for a second opinion about his breathing problems because of asthma and upper respiratory issues. He was getting injections about every 6 weeks, and those many trips to the vet were very stressful on him. Dr. McKerney, took Marshmallow off the injections - steroids and convenia – and put him on a tablet of doxycycline. She felt that his main issue is upper respiratory. Marsh has not had any breathing problems for a year, and he is happy to take his pill in a pill pocket! I have such a positive experience when Marshmallow and I visit. Marsh is not the best behaved patient, and Dr. McKerney is wonderful and is always so patient and gentle with him, and the staff is patient and gentle with him, too – I am grateful, and thankful!!

Dr. McKerney has been treating my cockapoo, Waldo, with accutpunture for a couple of months now due to a spinal injry that resulted in paralization in the hind area. Waldo can now walk, a little wobbly. When recommended to me we did not know if Waldo would ever be able to walk again. Dr, McKerney is worth our drive (50miles) and time. She was also very thorough in reviewing all of Waldo's medical records prior to seeing him. Waldo is never expereinces any anxiety about going - that says a lot!

Our dog Mucho was in intense pain last Christmas and having trouble walking. After a few weeks of rest and pain medication Dr Cahoon began treating him with laser and acupuncture therapy along with Chinese herbs. We are happy to report Mucho is now a happy active fellow. As we continue with his therapy, we are very grateful for this wonderful veterinary clinic.

They have been there through some of the most difficult decisions (letting our Oreo go) to just making sure our girls are healthy (annual checkups). They are loving to our Boston and Chihuahua even when the dogs are not willing to be touched. This is a very Caring place.
